Goolash
I am not quite sure who invented this food, but I am pretty sure it was an accident? I can't imagine that someone woke up in the middle of night and thought, "By George I've got it! The recipe that will scar children for the rest of their lives!"
Have you ever had it? I have. Only the kind my mom made didn't look like that. Hers had mixed veggies in it. Because to a child that makes it more desirable.
And what is with the name? Goo-lash??? How does that help people to want to eat your food? I understand "Death By Chocolate!" That sounds great. "Yummy Grilled Cheese" ...oh, it says yummy so it must be . Or "Better Than Sex" cake...wow! Really??
But Goolash? GOOLASH??
Ewe! That's what I said one night when my mom put a scoopful of it on my plate. I wasn't having it. I wasn't. I wouldn't. I refused.
I am not quite sure what kind of night my mother was having, but it wasn't working out for me. I am sure that she was having a stressful day and was just happy to have dinner on the table, only to have her favorite daughter (that's me) refuse to eat it.
"You will not leave this table until you eat your Goolash," she informed me.
I informed her that I was not having it by sitting at the table for hours and hours, refusing to eat it. Okay, so it probably wasn't hours...maybe just one...but when you are little and being forced to sit on a chair staring at that...that...stuff...smelling it, playing with it...imagining eating it...it was hours.
I can't remember if I ate it. I don't remember who gave in first. But I do remember hating Goolash. I do not make it. Goolash is not something that regulars my kitchen. Ever.
But if it did, you can bet it wouldn't be called Goolash.

Yeah...I would rename it, too. I haven't ever had it myself...although I remember "making" it as children (with mud and such). I don't think I would try to give it to my kids.
However...I do rename other things. Many green and less than desirable vegetable in our home get the name of "super food"....sounds much better than zucchini or spinach. But now my children are beginning to say..."I hate super food."
Where was I going with all of this?
Thanks for the laugh.
One of my favorite things as a kid was Golden mushroom.
Because really, who wouldn't love a pasta dish with Gold in the title?
Goolash... oh so yummy! filled with goo... whoever named it is a genius! :P
I think I had this regularly when I was a kid and it was seriously called "Chef's Surprise" - Ha Ha.
It came out of a box like Hamburger Helper and you added the ground beef. Oh yeah we feasted when I was a kid - Ha!
now i know if i come visit and u serve me goolash you can't stand me...lolol
never had it...never will...not a fan of (throw all into pot and heat up)
my mil did that to her family growing up...threw all her leftovers in a pot for end of the week meal. i'd have starved if i grew up with her. some things are not meant to be combined i tell ya
I grew up eating it, was pretty good the way my mom fixed it. I was very suprised when I tried fixing it for my now ex-husband for the first time and he refused to eat it!

Put a little hot sauce in that goolash and I'm all over it! :)
