That's disturbing....

Disturbing...

"Rock a bye baby, in the tree top" **Why would you do that?**
"When the wind blows, the cradle will rock." **No, seriously? Why?**
"When the bow breaks, the cradle will fall..." **and you didn't see that coming???**
"And down will come baby, cradle and all."

We sing this to our children, hoping it will help them sleep. And then we wonder why they are terrified of the dark.

Disturbing...

Doesn't Jack, from Jack and the Beanstalk, steal the giant's gold egg laying goose. The Giant of course chases the guy. I don't blame him. If I had a goose that laid golden eggs I would be ticked if some twerp kid came and took it.  Jack then chops down the beanstalk, killing the poor Giant. Jack was a jerk...and yet it is the Giant who gets a bad rap.

Why does the ax guy in Little Red Riding Hood have to chop up the big bad wolf? It is a children's book, for Pete's sake. Vomit would be better than mutilation, or the Heimlich maneuver. Don't get me wrong, I am not a member of PETA or anything. But chopping the animal in half? How in the heck does the illustrator draw a child appropriate picture of that??

Disturbing....

The amount of time, energy and lives I can waste trying to conquer the second level on Super Mario. Darn you spiky turtles!!

Now that...

...is disturbing.

You really want disturbing? How about the Little Mermaid who wants nothing more than to be with the man she loves instead turning into sea foam? Just wrong.
Axes and children tales is wrong. And they call our generation messed up ;-)

I've thought about this stuff for years. Humpty Dumpty always upset me as a child. I've always been tenderhearted and felt so bad for that poor little egg that all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put back together again! :(

haha i wrote a blog on that very thing a few years ago! freaky eh? or ring around the rosy! i mean hello it dates back to the Great Plague of London and we sing it with our kids! haha

i guess i had a stupid brain as a child b/c i never thought those were horrible...until i became a mom and realized what i was really saying to my kids! haha

Grimms Fairy Tales are pretty disturbing; that's for sure. And some of Hans Christian Andersen's are downright twisted.

Should it worry me that I love them?

;)

It is all very disturbing and I have wondered the same things myself.

What? HE CHOPS THE WOLF IN TWO? I never knew that. Yes. Yes, that IS disturbing. Thanks for bringing it up.

We alwasy sang it "And Mommy will catch you, cradle and all." Sounds much better...

I actually did a college paper on Grimm's vs. Disney fairy tales. The originals were not meant to be childrens stories... in no way shape or form.

FYI: In the real Cinderella, one of the step sister's cuts off her heel to fit it into the shoe. (As if the prince wouldn't notice blood everywhere)

You gotta love those fairytales and children rhymes and songs. It never occurred to me how disturbing the words were until I started learning them and singing them to E. Good thing I learned "alternate", kid friendly versions to them :)

Totally love that last part about Super Mario :) Did you finally beat it?

Ya as a child I never thought about it but now I realize how twisted some fairytales are. I will never sing ring around the rosie the same again. Some of the roots of these songs and tales are disturbing.
Did you know that Snow White and the seven dwarfs is based on the true tale of a woman getting lost in the woods and ending up living with seven men who rape her? Ya...nice story :)

I had a fairy tale book that remade the originals to sound more kid friendly. Ex.. Rock a bye baby in the tree tops when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the birds sings the baby will smile and fall asleep happy in a short while.

This is what I sang to my kids instead. Much sweeter

Ogden Nash a fairly obscure poet wrote a poem about what kinds of stories children like. You should read it. It's called "Don't cry darling, it's blood alright." It explains everything.

Oh, I forgot to add he was the one who coined the phrase "Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker." and other gems....just thought you should know.

okay, okay, one more....his "Ode to a baby" goes like this: A bit of talcum is always walcum. hee hee ho ho Seriously, you should look him up.
