U is for Un-Me

Junior high school.

It brings out the worst in all of us. Oh, come on. Admit it. I was a nice girl. But even I did stuff I regret when I was pubescent..

I remember Steph, my then bestie, and I getting our hair cut the same. Then a week later a girl that hung out with us decided get the same do. Yup, she was out. Because everyone knows you can't copy someone's hair without their permission. Hello!

The worst of it, though, was the time that Steph decided she didn't like Tanya. Tanya was a nice girl. I really didn't have a problem with her, other than she didn't really understand how to put on mascara. I didn't either, but that is why I simply chose not to wear it. But other than that she was pleasant enough.

But Steph decided she didn't like her anymore. I think it had to do with Larry because Larry was always the root of the problem. Regardless, she decided she didn't like Tanya and that meant I couldn't either. At least not that week.

Steph decided that she was going to fight Tanya. Well, that bit of news spread like wildfire across the school. "A fight. A fight. There's going to be a fight."

Well, the next morning before the  bell rang, Steph and I came up with a plan. I knelt down behind Tanya, pretending to tie my shoe and Steph was started talking smack and pushed her. She fell back into me which sent her falling backward to the ground.

Steph laughed.

I felt horrible. Why would I do that? I didn't have a problem with Tanya. It wasn't in my nature to be mean like that. Maybe to my sisters, but not to other people. I didn't even like Larry so why was I putting myself in the middle of their drama.

By the end of the week, Tanya was back in the group and all was forgiven. But not forgotten. At least not by me.

I have felt bad about that moment for a very long time. In fact, when I hear the words junior high this moment is the first thing that I think of.

Yes, junior high was ugly. Unbecoming. Unfortunate.

Unforgettable.

Junior High is rough man - really rough!!!
I have a similar regret - a girl we teased and taunted - she was shy, she was awkward and we weren't nice. I have often wished I could find her and tell her how sorry I am to have been a part of that. I really just want to hug her.
Why do kids do stupid stuff? I don't know.

Junior high/middle school drama can be intense. Makes me kinda glad I only have boys now that my oldest is there. Seems to be worse with the girls!

Funny how those moments can stick with us...

live and learn!

I used to have a pretty sharp tongue, and I think I eviscerated more than a few people in my junior and high school years, just for sport.

It never even occurred to me that the objects of my so-called "humor" wouldn't find it quite so funny.

Sheesh.

Wow--you were pretty rotten ;) heehee. Oh--so MANY regrets. Therefore I choose to push them back into my psyche for a few more years until they all come boiling over. Hopefully I will be super in control of my feelings by then that I can handle them.

Thankfully junior hight was okay for me. High school was hard. I just didn't really have group to hang out with until I was a senior.

That's how I remember junior high as well... it's also how I remember my bestie...

We went to the same school from
1st grade to 12th grade. I honestly cannot remember any bullies like your friend, but bullies are certainly prevalent now. So sad!!

Ah, Larry. :) I hated jr. high as well but my kids seem to be doing all right, maybe because they're in the midst of it. I had more anxiety about them starting jr. high than they did.

Sad thing is, some people still have the Jr High attitude! Now THATS ugly! Gotta admit I giggled at your memory. Think we all went through that, either as the giver or reciever...such is life :)

Junior high AND high school were pretty bad...or maybe it's just me. I've had plenty of those types of moments when I was that young too. Peer pressure is such a horrible thing when you are at that age, especially when you just want to be liked by others and not be outcasted too so you do whatever you can to not be casted off. It sucks but it happens a lot.

I'm so glad my junior high days are done. I'm dreading them for my daughter though!

Those are tough years. I think high school was really bad, too.

And what is it with mean girls? I always avoided them like the plague because I was so afraid of them all.

Trying to fit in isn't for sissies, for sure.

Thanks for this post.

I think.

It brought back some unpleasant memories of years I wouldn't go back to for a million bucks.

Thanks for linking.
